Rooted

The third series of our children’s worldwide travel and culture show Rooted was broadcast on Five TV from January 2006.

Each Rooted programme follows the journey of a British child as they travel to their family’s country of origin, to experience at first-hand the differences in culture, society, religion and daily life. The child spends time with, and lives the life of, local children of their own age and is forced to go beyond their “comfort zone” and really look at the contrasts – positive and negative – with their life in the UK.

Over three series and 39 programmes, Rooted has travelled from Bali to Zambia and from Colombia to Uganda. The programmes look at the practise of all the major religions worldwide, as well as exploring the belief systems of Zoroastrianism, Rastafarianism and Jainism. The programme format ensures that each country visited is shown in a positive and lively way, giving the British audience a real understanding and insight into the country, its unique culture and its people’s lives.

Rooted was short-listed for a BAFTA Children’s Award (Best Factual Programme) in November 2005 and for a Broadcast Award (Best Children’s Programme) in January 2005.

According to The Observer Rooted was “Possibly Five’s best documentary series” whilst the Sunday Times said that “It says a lot about how topsy-turvy today's television is that you learn more about non-Anglo Saxon cultures and non-Christian religions from this one series for children than you are likely to from a year of peak-time adult fare."
